First night after marriage: what should couples know?

First night after marriage: what should couples know?

Answer · 2 min read · By Rupesh Ojha

Short answer

The first night doesn’t have to be perfect — or even include sex. Many couples, especially in arranged marriages, are tired, nervous and still getting to know each other. Talking, laughing and simply being close is a wonderful start.

Why this happens

  • Expectations from films and friends create pressure.
  • Both partners are exhausted after the wedding.
  • Many couples have little knowledge or experience.
  • Nerves and shyness are completely normal.

What helps

  1. Talk first — about the day, about yourselves.
  2. Agree there’s no rush; go at the slower partner’s pace.
  3. Focus on comfort, kindness and consent.
  4. If sex happens, go slowly; pain is a reason to stop.
  5. Remember: intimacy is built over months, not one night.

Is it normal not to have sex on the first night?

Completely normal. Many couples wait days or weeks until they feel comfortable.

When to see a doctor: persistent pain during sex is common and treatable — a gynaecologist can help.
