How often do normal couples fight?

Answer · 2 min read · By Rupesh Ojha

Short answer

There’s no healthy number. Some happy couples argue often, others rarely. What matters is how you fight — whether you can disagree without contempt and repair afterwards. Frequent fights that never resolve, or that turn cruel, are the real warning sign.

Why this happens

  • Stress, tiredness and busy lives raise conflict.
  • Unresolved issues come back again and again.
  • Different conflict styles — one pursues, one withdraws.
  • Poor repair makes small fights feel big.

What helps

  1. Focus on one issue at a time.
  2. Avoid insults, contempt and eye-rolling.
  3. Take a break if either of you is flooded, then return.
  4. Repair: apologise, laugh, touch — show the relationship matters more than winning.
  5. If the same fight repeats, look for the pattern underneath.
