Is it normal to feel asexual sometimes?

Answer · 2 min read · By Rupesh Ojha

Short answer

Yes. Desire naturally rises and falls with stress, health, mood, relationships and life stage. Feeling no sexual interest for a period doesn’t necessarily mean you’re asexual. Asexuality is a lasting orientation, and both experiences are valid.

Why this happens

  • Stress, burnout or depression lower desire.
  • Relationship problems reduce interest in sex.
  • Hormonal changes affect desire.
  • Some people are asexual — and that’s a valid identity.

What helps

  1. Notice whether the change is recent or lifelong.
  2. Look at stress, sleep and health.
  3. Explore without pressure or labels.
  4. If you identify as asexual, communicate openly with partners.

Can you become asexual later in life?

Some people realise later that they are asexual; others experience a temporary drop in desire. Exploring gently, without pressure, helps you understand which applies.

When to see a doctor: a sudden loss of desire with low mood or fatigue is worth checking with a doctor.
